This class is ideal for home or business owners who are interested in having a new solar water heating system installed or for owners of solar systems who want to know more about maintaining them. The class will cover how solar water heaters can lower your energy bill, what to look for when buying a solar water heater, how solar water heater and solar electric systems work, financing options, basic maintenance and troubleshooting, and when to replace the system.

ENRG 101 Introduction to Sustainable Technologies

Introduces the student to the concepts behind sustainable technologies and explains how they work. Includes solar water heating, solar electricity generation (PV), energy management, energy storage, fuel cells, wind power, hydro power, bio-fuels, and current topics in the news. 3cr., 3hr. Spring 2008: Mondays, 6:00pm

ENRG 103 Energy Production Systems & Control/Solar Water Heating & PV
Prereq: ENRG 101 (or concurrent), or consent. Introduces theoretical concepts and practical applications of sustainable energy systems. Develops knowledge of photovoltaic, thermal, wind, hydro, ocean thermal, fossil, ocean wave, and absorption systems, with emphasis on solutions for residential and commercial applications in Hawaii. 3cr., 3hr.  Spring 2008: Tuesdays, 6:00pm


ENRG 193V Intership in Sustainable Technologies
Prereq: ENRG 101 (or concurrent), or consent. Provides hands on experience in sustainable technologies while working on projects on campus including testing at the Hawaii Energy Test Lab. Spring 2008: Saturdays, 9:00am-1:00pm


About the Instructors

Instructor Willy Bennett designed solar systems on Maui in the ‘70s, helped them design the Hubbell space telescope, and is director of Maui’s Hawaii Energy Test Lab. He has an electrical engineering degree and is a Certified Energy Manager.
